Meet Andrew
I’m a keen amateur photographer with a passion for nature, street, and travel photography. I have enjoyed the journey for over 30 years on both film and digital. The frames you see are digital and 35 mm. Very little post-production (if any) has been done. Guess that makes most of my work organic! My catalogue has too many images - like all photographers. I aim to curate the collection slowly, so keep an eye out for fresh images.
Personal Summary
My first camera was a Kodak slim Instamatic pocket camera (‘James Bond’ Style) Probably destroyed due water or the curiosity of a boy. I then progressed to a Kodak Instamatic 35mm. The small 4 shot flash unit attached to the top was an endless source of fascination. Following that I got a 35mm Minolta P. This was my father’s 21st birthday camera and I used it for many years. I mothballed the camera for a few years, (Later I had it serviced and once again I am using it.) So I bought my first ‘big’ film camera - Pentax Z10 - adding a few lenses as years went by. With the advent of digital and the lure of cheaper photos and near ‘instant’ review (chimping) - the 35mm was shuffled to the back of the camera bag, and finally the cupboard. My first digital was a Pentax Espio 2mp 38-70mm fixed lens (point and shoot). Stepping into the digital, my “what a big sensor you have scene” was scary. The choice and options were too good to be true- and with prices to match. But alas, the MP war was going full-steam and there was no way to keep up with the progress. So eventually, I dug in for a Olympus Pen Lite PL5, trusted the ‘massive’ 16mp would keep me going for years and not leave me with an expensive paper weight in 2 yrs. Overall, this was a good call - and the journey with M43 had begun.
Current Kit
Minolta P (35mm) Pentax K1000 (35mm) Mamiya ZM (35mm) Canon Ftb (35mm) Nikon D70 (digital) Olympus EM5MK2 (digital) Olympus OM-D E-M1 (digital). I also have a Leica Z2X and Canon EOS 300. Both 35mm and found in a thrift shop. Latest is a re-purchase of a Z10 body (film) purely for nostalgia. I gave my original Z10 to my local camera shop for his display. (I mean who was ever going back to 35mm?)
The Nikon, Canon and Minolta were all hand-me-downs from my father and grandfather. The Pentax K was an ‘I always wanted one of those’ and the Mamiya was my frugal tilt toward a less-known but quality body and lenses.
What I wish I knew as a beginner…
Take more memory shots and do not sweat the ‘tack sharp’, and get a ‘closeup photo of a leopard kill on every trip’ ideal.
Do not through away your negatives from 35mm.
Do not stick your original photos in a scrap book unless you have kept the negatives.
Do not wait for perfect photo conditions - go out and shoot.
Keep you camera near.
Print your good shots and show people.
Most memorable photographs…Without a doubt, photos with our young family and friends. Camping in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia will always be the most memorable because they were set in a time of ‘firsts’ as a growing family.
Dream location to shoot
My dream location is and likely will always be the bush of Africa. Specific locale that still gives me goose bumps - Chobe and surrounds of Northern Botswana.
